Rich

I found this in my dictionary under the term “rich”:

plentiful; abundant : China’s rich and diverse mammalian fauna.

• having (a particular thing) in large amounts : many vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidant vitamins | [in combination ] a protein-rich diet.

• (of food) containing a large amount of fat, spices, sugar, etc. : dishes with wonderfully rich sauces.

• (of drink) full-bodied : a rich, hoppy beer.

• (of the mixture in an internal combustion engine) containing a high proportion of fuel.

• (of a color or sound) pleasantly deep and strong : his rich bass voice.

• (of a smell or taste) pleasantly smooth and mellow : Basmati rice has a rich aroma.

• figurative interesting because full of diversity or complexity : what a full, rich life you lead!

Tonight I was working away [on the line with tech support about a bogus error I kept getting when I would use my FTP client] and I had Tycho playing in the background.  Tycho by the way is this great instrumental/synthetic/electronica artist that creates beautiful music–in my opinion.  What made this particular experience even better was I wasn’t playing the music out of my little laptop speakers, I had it blasting out of some JBL’s.  I had that music up so loud [since I was the last person at work] that you could feel the bass.  As I thought about describing it tonight the only word I could think of was “rich”.  I settled on such a word because the music had a wonderfully crisp and full sound to it.  Amazing.

Also, on my way into work I saw a legit sunset and that image carried over into the music.  While I listened I could close my eyes and see the sunset all the while still “feeling” the music.  And this whole day really built up to that moment where the base was pounding and my fingers were tapping away at the keys on my keyboard.

Today in English we listened to a lecture on the “Language of Music”.  It was put on by NPR and was a lot better than I thought it would be.  There were doctors [people with doctorates not real physicians] who talked about their study of music and speech and how the two were related.  During one segment they talked about how music affects moods and emotions, then they even went into discuss how you can almost feel music.  Its hard to describe but when you hear a really good song, that euphoric state, when you don’t want the music to end because you like it that much… That’s what we talked about.

Now I’m going to put on my headphones and enjoy more music,

Andrew Nemeth
