This weekend LakeShore hosted a “Mission’s Summit”. I’m not really sure what that name means but it was pretty much a gathering of all the missionaries that we support and sharing with the congregation the importance of missions work. It was cool.
Hayes and I attended this because we work for God Loves Kids [a sister ministry of Evangel Bible Translators]. We put up a nice booth and handed out packets of information.
Friday night [the first night of the conference] Hayes and I were waiting in the fellowship hall to get some food when we began talking to Kelli Johnson [a missionary from Kenya]. He was asking how we knew each other and Hayes explained to him that we work together. He jokingly replied, “Oh, so you guys are together?” [with a stress on ‘together’ to imply a relationship… She corrected him and said that we work together. And he made a comment about how maybe it was a prophetic word.
We both kind of blushed and Hayes nervously blurted, “No, he likes my sister”.
I was still fumbling for words, trying to think of something to say to Mr. Johnson when Hayes dropped that one on me. I didn’t really know what to say so I just gave an uneasy chuckle and fortunately someone else walked up and re-directed the conversation.
Then a little later that night a missionary from Russia stopped by our booth to say that we made a very cute couple. Slightly embarrassed because my parents were standing right there he went on to say that we looked like a cute young married couple. As he walked away I gave out a sigh of relief, but a moment too soon. He turned back around and continued talking to us for a bit about how we should be pure and save ourselves for our spouses. Now, allow me to interject my opinion: I don’t agree with pre-marital sex and so I appreciated him giving us some solid advice, however I think his timing could have been a little bit better.
My parents got a kick out of it,
