Some Wednesdays ago I decided to swing by Starbucks before going to the church.
I was about to enter the building when I noticed an older woman behind me also approaching the door, instead of just entering I thought I’d be nice and hold the door open for her. She really appreciated it. And I don’t mean she was like, “Oh thanks,” and didn’t really care, she really appreciated it. Not only did she appreciate it, she also felt that it had established a common bond between us and now she could share her life story with me. I politely listened.
A while later, after ordering, receiving my beverage, and seating myself, she joined me and continued to talk. She carried on about politics, her grandchildren, their manners, and the weather. I didn’t want her to think that I wasn’t polite, so I continued to listen, but all the while I kept trying to make it look like I was busy and needed to get back to work [which I was. I was working on some designs from my laptop].
It took a little while longer for her to get the hint, but finally she left and I was relieved.
