I Don’t Think I Can Make It

Every other sunday I help out in Childrens’ Church.  I usually run the lights/sound/computer/media stuff, and so for the majority of the service I’m back in the booth.  On this particular Sunday, a small child came up to me and told me, “I don’t think I can make it”.

He must have been about 6 years old because he was sitting in the K-1st grade area.  What was interesting about his comment to me was that he didn’t do anything to get my attention or to open up a conversation, he just walked up to the side of the booth and said, “I don’t think I can make it”.

I’ll admit that I had no idea what he was saying, so my response to his comment was simply, “What?”.  He said again, super calm by the way, “I don’t think I can make it”.

What does that even mean?  Maybe he needs to go to the bathroom? No, that wouldn’t make sense, he was way too calm to about to pee himself.  Maybe he was about to die?  That still doesn’t make sense as to why he was so calm.  Then on the 3rd time that he said, “I don’t think I can make it” he mentioned something about the ice being too cold.  I asked him to explain and he [in his 1st grade manner] did his best to communicate something about his finger and ice.

I did what any responsible childrens’ church leader would do and said, “Why don’t you go tell Mrs. Amber” [She's the Childrens' Pastors' Wife].
