I drive a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T. It currently has 115,217 miles on it. Routine maintenance suggests that the timing belt be changed at 100,000 miles. I took it up town to a recommended mechanic to get a written quote to perform the maintenance. The shop said it would cost $1109. At the time I thought that was craziness, now I see why they charge so much.
It took a total of 13 hours to replace the timing belt [and all that goes with it]. We ran into two small setbacks throughout the ordeal, but those were quickly countered with sound logic and me beating things with a wrench and/or metal pipe.
I finally got everything put back together and saved myself like $800. The only downside is that my Check Engine Light and my ASR [its like traction control] lights are both on. That can’t be good.

P.S. Huge props to my dad for helping with all this.
I’ve never fixed anything on a car that didn’t cause it to stop running (besides changing the oil) sadly enough that’s happened quite often… actually one time my belt broke and I drove it till the car over heated and the battery died (which honestly didn’t take that long…lol. Probably ended up costing me more because I had to replace the radiator and the water pump in addition to the belt…lol. But that’s what I get for buying thousand dollar cars…lol.

I know how to fix a car. You take it to the shop and sit at Starbucks, then get angry ’cause it takes so long for them to fix it.
