Last night at youth I was talking to a student who had some serious complaints. He explained to me that last week his phone had gotten wet and died. He had insurance so it wasn’t a big deal, but when he called to get it replaced they sent out a new one and charged him $50 for it.
He didn’t like paying $50 for a phone that was originally free with the plan, and so he complained about it for a short while. When he finished that rant he went onto talk about how the lady he talked to on the phone said his phone would be received in 1-2 business days.
On the second business day he received a call from FedEx stating that there was some mistake with his address and they couldn’t find the house. He complained for a few minutes more about how easy it was to find his house and how incompetent FedEx was. The resolve to the situation was that FedEx would deliver within the next two days.
The student assured me that if he didn’t receive it by 7 on the second day, that he was going to call up anyone who had anything to do with his late-arriving phone and give them a piece of his mind.
His rant lasted for about ten minutes in total. For the majority of the ten minutes I couldn’t take him seriously. Every Wednesday I work a few hours up at God Loves Kids. I work for children that are orphaned, children that lost parents to war and HIV/AIDS, I also work for children whose parents are too poor to support them and are forced to send them away.
These poor kids have it crazy tough. This spoiled Rockwall kid has his panties in a bunch because someone isn’t replacing the phone he broke fast enough.
He picked the wrong day to complain to me. I’ve got no compassion for him.

i think that’s called “perspective”. your whiney friend needs to go live with poor or desperate people for a few days.
(of course, they might just kvetch about it. some people don’t learn)

I started to get frustrated that I didn’t have a phone (for one meager week) then I worked on those Sponsor Packets and read all of the kids stories about parents who committed suicide, died of HIV/AIDS, abandoned them. I read of the kids who prostituted themselves so they could eat, the children forced to live on the streets because relatives wouldn’t take them in, families who died of genocide, homes that were destroyed by typhoons, villages that were burned to the ground. And suddenly, my life seemed so trivial, my problems so insignificant.
I look around and I sit here with everything, so unhappy. Those children in Africa and India have nothing, and they are filled with joy and thankfulness.
They are the faithful ones.
