Lumberjacking

My father and I aren’t lumber jacks by trade, but occasionally we dabble.

The day after Christmas, while most were shopping, my dad and I set out to trim back part of this huge tree that threatened to smash part of our house–had it fallen during a storm or high winds.  It was no small task however.  The pieces, which hung over our roof, needed to be cut in such a way that they wouldn’t fall directly on the house, but rather straight to the ground.

My dad and I devised a system that worked well enough, it involved me staying on the ground and pulling a chain that was wrapped around the limb that was being cut.  Then right before the branch was to fall I would pull it away from the house.

It was fun and although it wasn’t the typical Christmas activity, it was certainly a memory that I’ll have for a while.
